Mixed Metal Filigree Ball Necklace
I love Stella & Dot Jewelry I adore the big, chunky baubles and unique designs. Unfortunately, I just can’t justify the expense of the beauties when I know I can find a way to make it for less than that. My friend Rebecca and I made a version of the Vintage Tassel Necklace I actually like all the mixed metals but I am not crazy about the white bead necklace they used. Haute Couture Beading Contest Entry
This picture of Gwen Stefani on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar magazine has been hanging on my inspiration wall for about 3 years. So when I saw it was one of the dresses in Good Quill Hunting’s Second Annual Haute Couture Beading Contest I knew I wanted to participate. This was my very first beaded necklace. Up until now, I’ve just made a few bracelets designed by others so I felt a bit intimidated in trying to construct a piece of wearable art primarily from seed beads. I knew I wanted the piece to ruffle. Originally, my mind wanted to make many ruffles made up of seed beads, but when my first attempt on a loom took me all day , with only two inches of ruffle to show for it, I knew that wasn’t feasible. I ended up using an idea I saw on the cover of Mastering Beadwork by Carol Huber Cypher whereby you create a ruffle by adding larger beads to successive rows of herringbone stitch…Eureka!

Beads of Courage
We are proud to say that the Pediatric Oncology Nurses/Nurse Practitioners implemented the Beads of Courage Program at Mayo Clinic using money received from the Kids Cup in 2008. The program is a resilience-based intervention designed to support and strengthen children and families dealing with a serious illness. The children tell their story of treatment using colorful beads as meaningful symbols of their accomplishments and experience along their treatment journey. The Beads of Courage journey begins with the child receiving a length of string and beads to spell out their first names. Additional beads are then added to represent different treatment milestones such as clinic visits, chemotherapy and radiation treatment, scans, emergency room visits, transfusion, and surgeries as just a few examples. The beads of the necklace tell the child’s personal story. Patients are told to bring their necklaces to the clinic at each visit to have more beads added to symbolize their journey.

Curtain Rope Necklace Tutorial
Well, my favorite DIY fashionista has done it again with her rope necklace tutorial . Love Maegan took ready made curtain rope ties and ribbon and turned them into a fabulous statement necklace. The route to a good design can be hard or easy. It couldn’t be easier or more stunning than this. Not to mention cheaper too. She was inspired by the very expensive designer rope jewelry costing a few hundred dollars. As you can see from her tutorial, she neatly solved the issue of what to do with the thick cord ends. Sheer brilliance! I haven’t tried it yet but I think you could also use a couple of beaded lengths instead of cord. It’ll probably work better if the stringing was done with beading thread and not beading wire. Another idea is to make a really long beaded claspless necklace. Check out Jean Campbell’s 11 ways to wear a rope necklace on the Beading Daily blog . Shown here is the lariat style. You really can get a lot of mileage out of one plain necklace!
