Via Lauren Hanna Foster on Oct 2, 2011 True Life: Emotional Hoarding. It’s true. I am a hoarder. I hoard memories, emotions, attachments – I hoard moments, photos, passing glances. I hoard anything remotely tangible that I could possibly want someday. My jewelry box, for instance, is filled with jewelry from “boyfriends” I had in elementary and middle school. My bookshelf is cluttered with favors from weddings and baby showers and my closet contains shoe boxes of things I cannot part with for the significance I attach to the items. I even keep bags and bows that I once received presents in. A healthy fear of superstition keeps me from throwing these things away. What if I jinx something? What if I need this thing someday, this memory? What if I regret throwing it away? And so I keep things. A lot of things.

We had a traditional Catholic Ceremony to honor or parents but I had a Brooklyn children’s choir called Highbridge Voices sing elementary Catholic school songs that John and I both remembered as kids. Royal Tenenbaums was the movie my husband and I bonded over on our first date so I had our wedding party take photos dressed as characters from the film and hosted a photo shoot shot by one of the bridesmaids who is also a photographer. I framed the photos and these were then used as part of the reception décor. I wanted our guests to join in the fun so we had a photobooth that mimicked The Royal Tenenbaums set along with key props. Guests really enjoyed this! The escort card lockets (one of my favorite elements) echo one of the first gifts John every gave me while the jewelry boxes featured on tables are all vintage modeled after my mom’s art deco jewelry boxes I remember as a child, the vintage postcards on which guests were instructed to leave

I would be willing to bet that the variety of boxes I make and sell every week are very similar to those that many of you might be making. The difference is, rather than having a traditional lid; my boxes have a fixed lid, and are accessible by unscrewing the bottom, and are sold to funeral homes as cremation Urns. I do the same with segmented wood turnings, vases etc. Years before I ever started working professionally in wood, I built a walnut jewelry box as a Christmas present for my sister. It was a standard box, with a hinged lid and pull out tray. In fact I was a novice and couldn’t seem to get the mitered corners to align right so I hid the joints with a small turned accent column on each corner of the box. She loved the box. Little did I know back then that years later I would take the exact same design, place a divider under the tray to seal the bottom compartment from the lift out tray, call it a cremation urn and market it as an urn that had a small tray to store keepsakes like jewelry

Happy Attitude
So, it would have been me crowd controlling way too many people. And a sick kid. So I decided against it. And tried my best not to feel bad about skipping. I hate skipping things… And Eme and I had talked about going to the Jewelry Box for a little mini shopping trip, and I even got my new green coat on, but decided against it. We stayed home and did chores and homework instead. I folded my MOUNTAINOUS pile of laundry, and had Jake finish off his laundry from yesterday, and had Tom start his. Tom was feeling MUCH better, so I made him do his chores. I’m so mean, I know. And it took FOREVER for the laundry to get folded. I hate it when I let it get that far behind. LOL 
Anyway, Eme put hers away, Jake put away all of his, Joe and Jim put theirs away, and I hung up what needed to be hung up of theirs. I put the little boys to bed at 8:30 (late again!), and sent the big kids to continue with chores.
